Our Westquay project with ACME has been named Leisure Project of the Year at the AJ Architecture Awards!
Located in Southampton, next to the medieval town wall, the new build extension to Westquay Shopping Centre has created a new landmark destination for leisure activities, whilst also protecting and enhancing the relationship of the site and its users with the historic town walls and the neighbouring buildings. It includes a 10-screen cinema above twenty restaurants, a sixteen-lane bowling alley and a new public plaza.
Of particular note is the cinema, which overhangs the building on three sides, cantilevering around the perimeter. At its peak, the edge is an impressive 28 m from the nearest vertical support! In doing this, we were able to accommodate the protected sightline of the medieval town wall, minimising the massing of the building’s lower levels whilst maximising the upper.
