This north London project is becoming big news as its opening date approaches, and has been featured as this week’s Building Magazine cover story. The industry-leading medical research centre will provide a base for experts in a range of associated scientific fields to collaborate in developing cures and treatments.
The building’s scientific usage and sensitive future requirements has manifested in many unique structural features, as well as an immensely complex services strategy which demanded almost 25 % of the scheme’s huge budget. Such features include a gigantic, 4-storey basement which cleverly worked around a plethora of underground constraints, some of which had been in place for over a century. Precast concrete plunge columns 14 m long and weighing 15 tonnes were also the largest of their kind ever to be manufactured off-site.
