Associate Structural Engineer.

The position.

We are currently looking for a highly motivated Chartered Structural Engineer to assist in the management of an engineering team / projects within the structural engineering group at Associate level, reporting to a Management Director. You will have experience of undertaking the design and project management of structural and civil engineering projects. You will have been working on large scale projects and possess a strong awareness of the Construction industry. You will also have strong experience as a project engineer responsible for management of the design phase including f inancial management and control of the design process with experience of managing a team being desirable. You should have the commercial acumen to assist in key project decisions.

The role and responsibilities.

As a senior member of staff the responsibilities shall include, but shall not be limited to the following:

  • Managing projects effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to manage a team and effectively plan resource
  • Acting as a key client interface at a technical project level
  • Ability to develop designs from early concept stage through to final construction issue information
  • Attendance at Design Team meetings with Clients, other design collaborators and communicate design ideas through sketches, models and presentations
  • With the support of the Associate Director / Management Director, evaluate project challenges faced by the business and take action to mitigate risks and develop opportunities 1/2
  • Complying with all aspects of AKT’s Quality Management Systems/Procedures
  • Technical support and training to staff
  • Participate in forums to assist in the development of new ideas / innovation to promote and improve the company design reputation
  • Interface with wider businesses within the Group to ensure submissions maximise potential opportunities to offer full delivery of available Services
  • Overall Project Management including program and resource monitoring, quality control, technical management and delivery
  • Reporting on a regular basis to the Senior Management team, ensuring accurate and timely reports of key project deliverables
  • Complete performance reviews, manage attendance, holidays and any staff wellbeing issues as appropriate with the support of HR
  • Assist in the drafting of invoicing forecasts for projects with the support of Management Directors
  • Ensure strong team communication to facilitate exchanges of information and knowledge across the wider practice
  • Support and participate in AKT II’s Technical agenda
  • Comply with responsibilities as defined in the Group’s Health, Safety & Environment. Policy and ensure compliance with the same throughout the team
  • Preparation and management of Project Execution Plans
  • Preparation and management of the Project Inception Document
  • Representing the business, including related disciplines, at external meetings
Required skills.
  • Strong technical expertise in structural design across all traditional materials
  • Proven experience leading and managing projects across a range of sectors and geographic locations
  • Self‑motivated and eager to lead teams, with ambitions to progress into senior management and project leadership roles
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver projects to quality, time and budget requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of UK design standards and documentation practices
  • Effective communicator and collaborative team player with excellent client‑facing skills
  • Previous exposure to developers, major contractors, national and local authorities, and leading architects (highly desirable)
  • Proactive, enthusiastic and able to work independently using your own initiative
  • Adaptable, open to change and committed to continuous improvement
  • High level of IT literacy
  • Passionate about mentoring and developing team members to help them reach their full potential
Qualifications and experience.
  • Degree in Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng MIStructE / MICE or equivalent)
  • Proven leadership experience in managing and delivering design for major building projects
  • Track record of delivering full lifecycle projects through to completion
  • Strong generalist grounding with a clear understanding of multidisciplinary coordination in building design
  • Ability to work seamlessly with architects and construction professionals from early concept to final construction information
  • Thorough knowledge of concrete, steel and timber design codes, with strong understanding of Eurocodes and British Standards
  • Experience engaging with clients, designers, contractors and builders, demonstrating how strong technical design and management have built lasting client relationships.
  • Ability to identify, assess and resolve technical and operational challenges on complex, high‑end projects
