Project / Technical Director – Facade.

The position.

We are currently looking for a highly motivated Chartered Facade Engineer to assist in the management and technical delivery of projects within the facade engineering group at Project/Technical Director level, reporting into a Studio Director. You will have experience of undertaking the design and project management of complex UK and International engineering projects. You will have been working on large scale projects and possess a strong awareness of the Construction industry in the UK and International markets.

You will also have extensive experience as a project engineer responsible for management of the design phase including financial and commercial management and control of the design process with experience of managing teams being desirable. A seasoned Engineer you should be well acquainted with the industry scene in terms of contacts with Developers, Contractors and Architects.

The primary focus will be on candidates who can demonstrate a strong track record of successful project delivery, technical expertise, and leadership abilities.

The role and responsibilities.

As a senior member of staff, the responsibilities shall include, but shall not be limited to the following:

  • Extensive experience in managing multiple complex projects effectively and efficiently, with strong technical competency.
  • Ability to manage a large team(s) and effectively plan resource.
  • Exercise financial control over projects and assist in assessing fees and additional fee claims.
  • Significant and detailed understanding of software for all facade analysis.
  • Lead on preparation of the composition and submission of the Commercial aspects of PQQ/RFP including co- ordinating cross functional teams in support of this process.
  • Acting as a key client interface at technical and project delivery level, providing Client care and development.
  • Preparation / issuing of fee letters/invoicing schedules.
  • Client liaison and the production of tenders, including quality documentation and costings for submissions.
  • Overall Project Management including program and resource monitoring, quality control, technical management and delivery.
  • Act as a senior representative of the Practice in presenting the business to Clients, peers and at industry groups.
  • Complete performance reviews, manage attendance, holidays and any staff wellbeing issues as appropriate with the support of HR.
  • Comply with and have full understanding of the responsibilities as defined in the Group’s Health, Safety & Environment Policy and ensure compliance with the same.
  • The ability to clearly communicate technical and innovative design concepts through reports, sketches and presentation both internally and externally.
  • Providing technical support to the façade team.
  • Assisting in the development of new technology and ways of working
  • Undertake technical discipline leadership for Facades to enhance and develop the technical potential across the wider Practice.
  • Overall Project Management including programme, quality control, technical management and delivery.
  • High level report writing and technical review of work or project teams.
  • Raising the technical profile of the Facade Engineering Practice, internally and externally.
  • Leading Research and Development initiatives from raising funding applications through delivery, post-project completion, knowledge dissemination and implementation.
  • Overseeing technical consistency across the Practice’s project teams and offices.
  • Keep up-to-date with industry developments and technical advancements.
Qualifications and experience.
  • Relevant degree (Facade Engineering, Architecture, Building Engineering, Structural Engineering, etc.) and preferably a relevant postgraduate degree.
  • Fellow or Chartered Member of an industry related Professional Body i.e. CEng MCIBSE / MICE / MSFE.
  • Relevant experience of business development, plus the management and delivery of design for major building projects.
  • Demonstrate strong and fair leadership in the face of conflicting priorities and pressures.
  • A solid understanding of the London and international market.
  • Experienced in the delivery of complete lifecycle projects through to completion.
  • An understanding of large and complex programmes and the dynamics of strategic and tactical resourcing.
  • A good grounding as a general practitioner is also essential, with a thorough understanding of the interaction required between other disciplines associated with building design. Relevant experience of business development and maintenance of client relationships.
  • A familiarity with relevant UK, US and International design codes is essential. A solid understanding of Eurocodes will be advantageous.
  • As an individual of high calibre, candidates shall have had exposure to clients, designers, contractors and builders. Through the effectiveness of their technical design and management, the candidate should be able to demonstrate how these relationships have led to the delivery of excellence and the development of client relationships.
  • An appreciation of and an ability to positively resolve issues arising from challenges both technically and operationally to deliver on high-end complex projects

  • Excellent technical background in the façade design.
  • Good communicators, capable of cultivating a positive working environment and be able to demonstrate experience in managing and leading teams / projects across a range of industry sectors.
  • Enthusiastic, pro-active and able to work on their own initiative.
  • Personable and able to demonstrate an ability to build professional and business relationships.
  • Open to change and have a desire for personal growth and improvement.
  • A high level of IT literacy is essential together with a desire to nurture and develop staff to maximise their full potential.
