Engineers take action.

Global Climate Strike.

For the global Climate Strike, our practice decided to host discussions and debates surrounding what more we as a business, as engineers and as individuals can do to tackle the current climate emergency.

20th September 2019. The day of the global climate strike, where people of all ages around the world are striking in protest, asking for those in power to take more action against the global climate crisis. For AKT II and our staff, it was a day of education, discussion, and activism.

We kicked the day off with a breakfast discussion at our London HQ, where we encouraged staff to fill out an online form so we could gather ideas on how we can make the office greener. Some of the suggestions included were offsetting carbon for business-related flights, going ‘meat-free’ on Mondays and powering down all PC’s automatically overnight.

We then moved to our morning discussions from all the different teams covering a wide range of topics and ideas to tackle carbon emissions within our industry. There were presentations from the structural and civil engineering teams, our Envelopes (façade) and geotechnical teams, our computational research team (p.art) and Tyréns UK! Our Manchester and Cambridge offices even conference called in to lead discussions and host presentations.

From all the information gathered and the ideas debated and discussed throughout the day, our Climate Emergency Committee will action and set our agenda for the year ahead, outlining targets for the office and guidelines for our engineers.

We’re immensely proud to have a passionate team of engineers who are ready and willing to affect change within our office, our business and in our industry.
