Oxford celebrates opening of new humanities centre.

Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities.

The University of Oxford has opened the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, a significant new destination for the arts, humanities, and public culture in the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter.

Bringing the humanities together under one roof.

The Centre unites seven of Oxford’s humanities faculties – including English, History, Philosophy, Music, Medieval and Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Theology & Religion – alongside the Oxford Internet Institute, the new Institute for Ethics in AI and a comprehensive humanities library. Under one roof, previously dispersed departments and collections now converge in a single, purpose designed facility offering teaching spaces, research hubs, flexible libraries, and dedicated study zones.

A new cultural destination for the wider public.

Crucially, the building extends far beyond academia – it is designed to embrace public engagement and cultural life. The ground floor, open to all, includes a 500 seat concert hall, 250 seat theatre, cinema, exhibition and gallery spaces, a museum for the historic Bate Collection of musical instruments, café and landscaped gardens. The centrepiece is the dramatic four storey Great Hall – a timber and glass domed atrium that serves as a civic forum and symbol of openness.

Supporting interdisciplinary insight for contemporary challenges.

At a time when global challenges such as artificial intelligence, ethics and climate change demand broad, grounded human insight, the Schwarzman Centre stands as a bold reaffirmation of the humanities’ vital role. It fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural exchange and public dialogue – with sustainable design ambitions (including Passivhaus standard performance) aligning perfectly with contemporary environmental expectations. We look forward to seeing the extraordinary scholarship, creativity and public engagement that will emerge under its roof.
