We supported Space Group Architects in this competition-winning design for the Rupp Arena and masterplan in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. The scheme involves remodelling the existing arena to add extra and better seating as well as providing state-of-the-art ‘back-of-house’ facilities. It also includes relocation of the connected conference centre and retail facilities.
The remodelling consists of reusing the existing structural framing of the arena while maintaining the existing functionality. A new roof and new cladding is introduced with upgraded circulation at all levels.
The proposed façade consists of manipulating the rigid rectangular form into a warped fluid translucent and clear glazed skin allowing the arena to be a stand-alone form within the leisure complex.
The design consists of a new roof structure capable of supporting a retractable central console thereby allowing the venue to be used for other functions. The aim is to replace the roof within an off-season window of one year.
